Historic border region The countryside in this special border region of Denmark is extremely varied. The western part is characterised by flat marshland with one of the most important wetland areas anywhere in Europe, home for up to 23 million birds at peak periods. The distinctive old marsh farms bear witness to the harsh life associated with farming in the shelter of the seaward dikes. In the middle of this Wadden Sea area of wetlands is the island of Rømø, at the end of an almost 10- kilometre-long causeway. |
